I'm baaack! And it's question time...

Dear Bloggers,

Let me pose a hypothetical question to you all:

If you went online, searched for a blog, found it, had a nose about but didn't like what you read...

Tell me.

Why would you continue to come back?

Moreover, if that anonymous blog belonged to a friend - why would you search for it in the first place?

Let's speculate...

If I didnt like it? No I wouldn't go back.

Why would I search for it? Egotistical reasons, was something written about me? Possibly to see something gossipy written about someone I knew.

reason to search: general nosiness about you but mostly ego: what do they say about me? where is ME on their blog?

Reason to continue reading: I wonder if they'll talk about ME again/yet [delete as applicable]. Is there any ME in the blog? Let's see if there is more ME today.

Cheers, Robbie & anotherblogger.

And if you were that person who was annoyed, would you confront the blogger?

sheer morbid curiosity to see if they were talking about me!

i think anotherblogger is right - they are coming back to see if you have written anything else about them.

if a friend of mine wrote bad things about me, naming me i would confront them. but if i wasn't named i reckon i'd forget it.

i mean we all bitch at some point right, and maybe it's best its anonymous and not to the friendship group....

Reading things that you're not supposed to read, or that could be bad, is strangely compelling.

Are you kidding me? It's all part of our seemingly limitless capacity for self-abuse. It's as much a part of the human condition as eating junk food or drunk dialing. I only WISH I could stop reading my ex-girlfriend's boyfriend's blog.

If I didn't know who the blogger was or like it I wouln;t go back, however if I knew someone tghat had a bog I might search for it...but only because I am very nosey an like others have seen would like to see what they're writing about just out of curiosity

PJB, Hmmm yes that seems to be the case here...

Em, That's why I blog. It's cathartic. I don't use names, I don't promote this blog anywhere other than the blogging community. Everyone has their ways of dealing with stress, right? I blog for that reason.

Rage, Unbearable, - You're both right. It is compelling to read these things, but never a good idea.

Miss H - But would you then be in a position to moan about the blog, or be unhappy with it, if you read something you didn't like?

Next question: If a friend left her diary on the table in front of you and left the room for a long period of time - would you read it?

For me, that's what it feels like when someone from real life makes efforts to read this blog.

I have this problem. Except blog does not belong to a friend, rather somebody I know will write things I don't like. Yet I keep having to check it, despite how awful it makes me feel.

If somebody is going to bitch about you, or people you know, and make it public, then you have to be pretty super-human to conciously avoid it.

I get a couple of hundred hits a day from past/present workplace IP addresses. Like Robbie said, they're looking for something gossipy - possibly written about them, or about someone they know.

But I don't dish workstuff cos, you know, I like working.

Whoops, I meant blog not bog..damn by bad spelling!
No I wouldn't read the diary. I guess because blogs are on the world wide tinternet they are public. If someone I didn't want to read my blog found it it'd be a bit peeved but then i kind of put the adress out there everywhere except for facebook so its pretty easy to find if someone wanted to. I know some collegues have found it though which freaks me out a bit

I second almost everyone above. And what did you see?

Gossip, and well gossip.

With your blog, well you are a good writer, fun and well caustic, which i really enjoy.

A 'friend' either enjoys your writing, or keeping up with your life because you either arent in contact or you dont talk about this stuff to them.

Or maybe they are jealous they arent in your life anymore?

I try not to think the bad stuff about why ex friends read a blog, but of course i do. I moved my blog to wordpress and banned em. Problem solved.

;)

I can only remember maybe 2 posts that might have upset 1 friend. It would be shocking if (a) any other friend was insulted by your writing (b) that friend wants to read your blog (doesn't seem the type). Talk it out?

Will reply properly later, lots of good comments on this one... But Ellie, you're on the right track- option 2.

If in RL the blogger was friendly and nice to me but in their blog, they were not so nice and friendly, then it's possible that I would confront them, to let them know that I'd read what they'd written. At least then, I wouldn't have to pretend to be nice to them.

I'm not sure that I'd want to continue reading - would only cause grief?

That said, if I wasn't actually named and no one else knew it was me, then likely I'd not bother saying/doing anything.

Oo eck. Is this going to end up being one of those blogging posts about I know that THEY know that I know that THEY know.

I can never keep up with them.

Can you not write instead about leery French men? Or being sick on your way home after an evening full of nightclubbing?

First thoughts, not a very anonymous blog, if hypothetical person worked out who's hypothetical blog it was.

The reason to go back would be it's like a loose tooth. It hurts but your tongue can't help straying to check it out.....

We are human, we will upset people along the way. The test of a true friendship is whether it can get over a good disagreement.

Unfortunately being English we have a tendency to hold back our feelings which can build up resentment. At the same time we are not great at being told the truth about ourselves. So a fine line to walk.

We should be more like the Italians, at each others throats one minute and then walking down the road the best of mates the next.... Just got to avoid the hanging around mirrors and running away thing. I think that I've hypothetically upset enough people for now....
