Little bold move

This evening I made an unexpected move.

Not a huge one, nothing unprecedented, nothing concrete, just a little edging out from where I am currently headed. Which is back home, with my parents, to the outskirts of London.

I was just having a little look on Gumtree at what's out there in the way of houseshares. Not really expecting to find anything other than dodgy landlords or foreign students in squats, I stumbled across an ad that caught my eye. In the same area as the flat, round about the same price, but more people. A sociable, mixed bunch looking for a 20-something female to share with.

It might be a moment of madness that I'll regret tomorrow, it could all be too soon. But my thinking is that I need to be busy. And right now, living at home again...I'm not. I'm in my room, watching TV and cuddling labradors, which is just what I need - right now. But as the healing process continues, I know I'll be itching to get out again. Even though the idea of living with four other people would have sent me running for the hills a month ago, now it seems like a good idea. So I replied to the ad.

It feels safe, there's no obligation - I'm just testing the water. Dipping a toe in. Looking at the options available to me. They might respond, they might not. They might let me look around, but choose someone else. Who knows?

Anyway, after the events of the last month, what else can I possibly lose?

Your toe? Just kidding. Go for it. The worst that happens is you have to move again. And last year you were constantly on the move so it's old hat now.

Black or brown lab? Does yours have the same habit of trying to get food at every opportunity, and then falling asleep on you whilst snoring quietly and farting every so often?

My wife may confuse me with a lab from time to time....

Good luck! Two of my best friends (they're like my brothers) were strangers until we shared a house for 3 years together.

Having been on the gumtree trial before I can understand your trepidation. However, as others have said, you might end up finding the best friends you've ever had. Or you might end up living with the kind of weirdos I ended up living with. Whatever the outcome, it all adds to the rich tapestry of life :)

Good for you, hope it works out!

When I was in my 20s I too looked at possibly house-sharing. However, things that had been happening were all resolved and I no longer had to move out. All I would say is dodge the ones (if this happens at all on Gumtree) that specify in their ad `must be female and willing to supply photo' (but then I think that's pretty obvious!).

The great thing about flat hunting on Gumtree is that it tends to be totally hit or miss - you will get there and it'll either be spectacular + you'll jump at it, or it'll be rubbish and you'll run out of there at full sprint. Easy decision either way.

Probably a wise choice, as I think you're ready to no longer be living with the 'rents.

Of course this could create excellent blog fodder, which we thank you in advance for!

Good for you! I hope it works out, and if not, there's bound to be someone else looking for a roommate!

jman - That's true. It would be lovely to stay in one place for a while. Wishful thinking eh?

model - One black lab, one golden. Yes, yes yes, guilty looks abound in our household.

Redbookish - Well, who knows what happens when you're thrown together with randomers! It can either go badly or well :)

nutty - Ah yes, and my tapestry of life is definitely in need of enriching right now ;)

Thanks Victoria!

London lass - Yes, that's sensible advise. Same goes for job ads on that site too!

1Fighting - Yep, it's my first time on Gumtree but am expecting instinct to kick in when it comes to the 'yes' or 'no' part.

Perp - Ah yes, when in doubt, blog about it! I'm definitely ready to live away from the 'rents...

Breezy - Time will tell, I'll keep you all updated!
